The question

Light fixtures already blanket indoor spaces, and each could be an access point. How can hybrid VLC/RF and VLC/WiFi cells hand over seamlessly, prioritize feedback traffic, and be managed intelligently at scale?

The research thread

The work runs from the 2023 University of Palermo PhD thesis, An Intelligent Management System for Hybrid Network between Visible Light Communication and Radio Frequency, through experimental handover models and into learning-based management.

The hybrid cell

A field-notebook view of the working cell: a luminaire doubles as a VLC downlink, RF covers the gaps, and an intelligent management system arbitrates handover.

VLC: Luminaire downlink
RF: Coverage across gaps
Management: Handover arbitration

Conceptual view of a hybrid VLC/RF cell and its management path.
